TXDOT Letter Regarding Seal
Coat Projects
|
ACTION ALERT The Texas Department of Transportation has announced their plans for "Seal Coat" projects scheduled for the summer of 2008. The LBC encourages all members to contact the Tyler Regional office of TXDOT to comment on this plan. As cyclists and drivers on the area roads, the quality of our roads and highways is of great concern to us. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with chip seal practices and issues. Let your TXDOT representatives know your feelings. The end result of chip seal projects can vary dramatically. In good situations, the resulting road way offers a pleasant driving experience, excellent cycling and greatly improved life of the road way. In bad situations (and we know a lot about these), the "chip seal" road is a cobbled mess of aggregate that is a nuisance for both cyclists and drivers. A quick search on the Internet provides tons of information on chip seal techniques and practices. The bad chip seal need not be so. TXDOT highway engineers can choose aggregate, top seals (fog-seal, cape-seal, etc.) and other design elements that accommodate all road users with safe, long-lasting and SMOOTH surfaces. The LBC encourages its members to let TXDOT and our elected representatives know that we value roadways suitable for ALL transportation modes -- including bicycles. Please take a few moments to contact the following and voice your concern.
