March Meeting Minutes President McCord opened the meeting. Sharon gave the treasurer’s report. We have 136 members and cash in the bank. Dennis provided a review of the minutes from the last meeting. Mike Ford, March ride director stated there was no official LBC club ride this Saturday, March 17, due to several folks riding in Beauty and Beast. Club rides will begin at 10 am starting March 24 at the bike shop. Ben Gallagher is the April ride director and stated we will have a couple of rides starting at the airport and going south. Ben is also the time trial director and reminded everyone time trials start again on the 3rd Tuesday of April. Discussing centered on the special ride in May to Jefferson. Most folks were in favor of a May 19-20 date. Those who want to participate will ride from Longview to Jefferson, spend the night and ride back the next day. Dave Plants stated the bike shop will cookout this year on the Monday night ride preceding each time trial. We also received an update from Mark on his Natchez Trace solo cycling adventure. The meeting was turned over to Mike Ford, program director who introduced the evening’s speakers, Devon and Dave Kaufman. They recently attended the Cooper Institute in Dallas where they became certified personal trainers. Dave and Devon discussed important aspects of what they each learned. According to the Body Mass Index (BMI ), they were both borderline obese. They stated that the BMI is not kind to athletes. Devon stated at the end of the day it boils down to calories in versus calories out. Also for rides under an hour, it is not suggested to drink sport drinks as it negates the calories just burned. Sport drinks are best for exercise lasting more than an hour. They discussed best practices for training, which involves a variety of strength/resistance training and aerobic exercise. When exercise, they advised performing a total workout not just focusing on a particular muscle group. Cyclists in particular need to develop core strength. Dave and Devon are looking for new clients (aka guinea pigs) to utilize their new found knowledge and certification on. If members are interested, you may contact them at the bike shop. The meeting was adjourned. |
